Research:
Postdoctoral project: I am currently working on two parallel post-doctoral projects: Effects of urbanization on the behaviour of wild animals towards humans, funded by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office of Hungary, and Cognitive abilities and adaptations to man-made habitat changes: behavioural and molecular evidence, funded by Vinnova, the Innovation Agency of Sweden. In both projects, I am exploring the relationship between cognition and urbanization. Cities provide novel and complex habitats to animals, where advanced cognitive abilities may be beneficial. In aviary experiments on great tits (Parus major), I am studying various cognitive abilities and whether they are related to habitat urbanization and to behavioural, hormonal and genetic characteristics.
PhD project: My PhD thesis, titled Behavioral responses to humans and predators in urban and non-urban birds, focused on urbanization’s effects on anti-predator behavior in birds. As urban habitats are characterized by a higher level of human disturbance and a different composition of predator fauna compared to natural habitats, we may expect that the behavioral responses to humans and natural predators also differ between urban and non-urban birds. I investigated flight initiation distances from humans, habituation to disturbance in captivity, differential responses to individual humans, and feeding rates in presence of a human or a natural predator, in two urbanized bird species, the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the great tit.
PhD thesis: http://real-phd.mtak.hu/718/1/Vincze_Erno_dissertation.pdf
MSc project: In 2009 and 2010 I did research for my Master thesis at the ELTE Biological Research Station, Göd, Hungary, in a research group studying mate choice and parental cooperation in Zebra Finches (Taenopygia guttata). I investigated whether female mate choice is related to individual differences in object neophobia.
Other projects: In 2015 and 2016, I worked as a guest researcher at the Ludwig Maximilians University München. My project was a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature on urbanization’s effects on the predation of natural and artificial bird nests. Furthermore, in 2011, I did field assistant work in the Netherlands (University of Groningen) on Ruffs (Philomachus pugnax), as well as in Australia (Macquerie University) on Chestnut-crowned Babblers (Pomatostomus ruficeps).
